Chestnut Pergola

Originally to be made of old hop poles this garden pergola was constructed in newly coppiced chestnut from local woods. It will support Wisteria, Clematis and other plants and is intended to attract more birds into the garden.

There are plenty of old hop poles in Kent just waiting for new uses, but sadly not available for this project so new timber was sought.

Testing the geometry and the connections.

The posts are charred to resist rot where they will be buried.

The timbers are bolted together in three directions to make stiff connections and avoid cross bracing.
